OUR MISSION

Skirt was founded to help women look good and feel their best

MAUREEN'S STORY

At 24, I was living in New York City, working in fashion, newly out of college—and missing home. After the tragedy of 9/11, I knew with certainty that I wanted to be closer to my family. But even more than that, I wanted a job that I loved waking up to every day.

I wasn’t happy in a cubicle, even though I was working in the fashion industry. I wanted to create a life that excited me, surrounded by smart, funny, fashionable women. What better way to spend my days than in their company? That dream became Skirt.

I knew very little about business, so I read everything I could—including Business Plans for Dummies. I had no money, so I knocked on every bank’s door and applied for every young entrepreneur program I could find. Finally, one took a chance on me, granting my very first loan. It was much smaller than I actually needed to open a business—but I didn’t know that at the time.

On December 1, 2001, Skirt opened its doors just a few hundred yards from where we are today. It was a ramshackle old house, and my dad and brothers helped me paint and build dressing rooms. My mom scoured antique stores and IKEA to make it feel like the luxury boutique I had envisioned. My sister worked shifts when I couldn’t. For the first several years, I was my only employee, working seven days a week.

Quickly, I connected with the women in my community, and the business grew. I made it a point to surround myself with people smarter than me and learn everything I could from them. I understood my strengths, but just as importantly, I knew what I didn’t know.

From the beginning, my true passion wasn’t just fashion—it was creating careers for people who, like me, wanted to love their job every single day. And over the past 25 years, I’ve been lucky enough to do just that.

Five years after opening in my tiny space, I moved Skirt to its current location—and business exploded. I never imagined it would grow into what it is today: three locations, 27 employees, and countless friendships with clients, designers, photographers, and fellow business owners. A lifetime of celebrating fashion and friendship.

But the part that still surprises me? How much I love the behind-the-scenes. What truly fuels me after all these years is figuring out how to make customers feel special, how to create unforgettable experiences, and how to curate the best product mix in the Philadelphia area. That’s what keeps me excited and challenged.

I love retail—not just as a business, but as a career. It’s tough, and it’s not for everyone, but for those who find joy in it, it can be incredibly fulfilling. Skirt has given me the chance to create something meaningful, to grow a company while raising three children and building a life I love. Some days, I truly feel like I have it all—a career that excites me, a family that fills my heart, and the freedom to be present for the moments that matter most.

That is the greatest gift Skirt has given me.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE BRANDS

Over the last two decades, we’ve navigated trends and designers to make our shopping services just as coveted as the clothes. Skirt imbues personal care into dressing women across all sizes and tastes, offering our clients the experience of customized styling.

How Skirt Gives Back

At Skirt, we’ve always lived by one motto: “We Celebrate Everything!” This spirit is woven into everything we do, including how we show up for our community. We proudly support local charities that make a meaningful impact and align with the values at the heart of Skirt. When you shop with us, you're not just investing in your wardrobe — you’re helping us give back to the community we all call home. Because around here, giving is always worth celebrating.

GIVING BACK

At Skirt, community is at the heart of everything we do. In 2025 alone, we proudly gave back over $117,475 to local charities and foundations through a variety of meaningful initiatives:

Our closet in your neighborhood

We partnered with OCIYN, a program providing essential clothing, food, and resources to individuals across the city. In 2024 alone, we donated 564 pieces of clothing to help support their mission of dignity and care.

12 DAYS OF GIFTS & GIVING

Each December, we celebrate the season with 12 exclusive gifts for our customers—while giving back to causes that have touched our hearts. 10% of all 12 Days sales are donated to organizations like Help Us Adopt and Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center.

SKIRT FOR SCHOOLS

Our annual Skirt for Schools fundraiser brings moms together to shop in support of their children’s education. 10% of every purchase goes back to their school, and the school that raises the most receives 20% of all proceeds. Additionally, Skirt donates 20% of total funds to the Gesu School of Philadelphia.
